Listen up kids: Eat your pizza! I mean, eat your vegetables?

The most recent thing on the agenda? Well, haven’t you heard? Pizza is now a vegetable! No, but seriously.

The implications of this are vast, but I think probably the most disturbing part is how easily manipulated us consumers are. Its all about marketing, cheap raw materials, maximizing profit…the words “health” and “long life” have no place when you’re talking about mass produced frozen lunches and corporations not losing out on a meaningful gross margin.

The worst part yet is how adamantly we’re defending our goddamn french fries, chicken nuggets and other assorted lunchtime goodies. Seriously? We’ve been so brainwashed and so deluded that we can’t even bear to part with it all – we NEED it, lets just call it a vegetable!

We feed our kids crap. Most adults would agree – the “pizza” in the cafeteria isn’t fresh. It’s full of preservatives and weird chemicals and things I can’t pronounce. I’m sure those kids will grow up and some of them will learn to make healthy choices but how come we aren’t GIVING THEM THE OPTION NOW?

Gah. Signing off – time to go eat a banana and a spoon of peanut butter – yes thats right, its delicious. And its tasty. And its not going to kill me in 60 years.

That “vegetable” might kill you a lot sooner than 60 years! What I don’t understand is if they are going to make guidelines at least try and regulate some of the stuff you shouldn’t be eating. While the tomato paste might have a serving of vegetable it probably has more than a days worth of sodium and other stuff.

I don’t you think you can regulate nutrition. Every time a well intended regulation comes out the industry finds a way to circumvent them. May be we can put a bigger focus on educating the consumers. Show the kids/parents in no uncertain terms the impact of continuing a diet like that. Let them choose their health over their taste. And if they still choose to go for that “vegetable” then no regulation would be able to help them.

Exactly. That “tomato paste” is barely a vegetable. Furthermore, its almost like we’re FORCING our kids to eat crap. We’re not even giving them any other options at school – its laughable. Then we whine and bitch and wonder about obesity – well yeah…no shit, sherlock!

The industry finds a way to circumvent nutritional practices because it doesn’t benefit them. Educating the consumer is EXACTLY what my aim is. Clearly, corporations aren’t going to stand up for what’s right.

ok i always thought vegetables had to grow from a plant or the ground or something like that. how can pizza do that?? sheer ludacris. i really thought this was a joke when the news was talking about it, did not think it could ever be REAL.
